At Bayou Gundog, we are proud to raise field-bred Golden Retrievers with the beauty, intelligence, and working ability the breed was originally created for. Our dogs come from proven field lines and meet all health standards set by the Golden Retriever Club of America, ensuring every puppy has the foundation for a long, healthy, and active life.
We breed with purpose, selecting for natural hunting instincts, exceptional trainability, and a balanced temperament. They’re eager to work, easy to live with, and deeply devoted to their people—true to the Golden Retriever’s heritage.
From early socialization to quality care, each puppy is thoughtfully raised to grow into a confident, capable, and loving member of your family.
To ensure every pup is placed in the home that best fits their abilities and your goals, we follow the process below.
To be considered for one of our upcoming litters, the first step is submitting our Puppy Application.
This helps us understand your experience level, your goals—whether hunting, hunt tests, or field trialing —and the type of pup you’re seeking.
Applications must be submitted and approved before deposits are accepted.
After receiving your application, the Bayou Gundog team will review it and contact you within a few days.
If approved, we’ll send deposit instructions and answer any questions about our program or litter timelines.
To reserve your place in line for a puppy, a $500 deposit is required once your application is approved.
Deposits are applied to the total puppy price and secure your position for an upcoming litter.
At Bayou Gundog, our priority is placing every puppy in the home where they are most likely to thrive. We use the following process:
When pups reach the 7 weeks, we conduct the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test to evaluate temperament, confidence, drive, sound sensitivity, retrieving instinct, and overall aptitude.
After reviewing test results, we match each puppy to the most suitable home based on:
Your intended use for the puppy (hunting, performance, active family, etc.)
The temperament and drive you’re looking for
The lifestyle and experience level described in your application
This ensures every puppy is placed where they can succeed—whether that means a high-drive working home or a more relaxed, companion-oriented environment.
